I have also had problems with go daddy and have heard of problems with hostgator. So like you I was looking for an other option. What you will find is that there are a lot of other options as well, but most of them will be a lot more expensive. The one I decided to go with is http://thephotoshopeditor.com/hosting (not an affiliate link)
I haven’t had any problems with them yet. There server up time is good and speed is right up there with go daddy and hostgator.

“20 years using web hosting providers”
There was no web hosting 20 years ago. I built my first website in 1995. Domain names were $ 100 a year and hosting was $ 50 a month. My provider gave training classes every Saturday.
He may not like GoDaddy or HostGator, but the others are far worse.
Disclaimer: I’m a Godaddy reseller for about 8 years, HostGator before that. All my others are out of business.
I don’t know what kind of issues you’ve had with godaddy and hostgator – I’ve used both and never had a
problem – I will say this.
If they don’t seem to help you or hold your hand because you’re a beginner – no company will. You will get help to a certain point, and that’s it. Most questions customers want help for are not related to hosting *side* issues at all. The problems are generally related to a third party app or coding that a hosting company can’t support.
